Making magnets flip like cats at room temperature

In today’s world of ever-increasing digital information storage anpost picd computation, the next information storage revolution seeks to exploit a novel effect arising from the relativistic physics of Einstein, which allows to effectively convert a new type of magnet into cats. Through this effect, these magnets can flip themselves through the internal motion of their own electrons. One can almost describe these new types of magnets as relativistic magnetic cats.

In these new magnetic materials, a current running through the magnet can flip the direction of the magnetization depending on the direction of the current. This novel phenomenon in physics, dubbed spin-orbit torques, links the spin-degree of freedom of magnets that gives rise to the magnetization, to the charge degree of freedom that allows for current-charge motion inside the material. 20.05.2016 – SPICE Workshop: Quantum Acoustics – Surface Acoustic Waves meets Solid State Qubits

This week, SPICE hosted a Workshop boosting the new field of Quantum Acoustics‐ a phonon analogue of quantum optics on chip – where single phonons in the form of high‐frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs) propagate in acoustic waveguides coupling remote qubits. The team of organisers consisted of Göran Johansson (Chalmers, Sweden), Christopher Bäuerle (CNRS, France), Paulo Santos (PDI, Germany) and Floris Zwanenburg (Twente, Netherlands). They brought together three scientific communities which have not interacted substantially before, i.e. Surface Acoustic Waves, Solid State Spin Qubits and Superconducting Qubits. In the beautiful location of Schloss Waldthausen, fifty-two international scientists used talks, discussions and a poster session to explore contact points and potential synergies for these three fields. We thank the organizers and all participants for a successful workshop.

06.03.2016 – "Spin Hall Effect and Spin-Orbit Torques” at the 80th DPG annual conference in Regensburg

Foto_speakers_and_organizerOn March 6th, the first day of this year's DPG spring meeting in Regensburg, Christian Back from the University of Regensburg, Stefania Pizzini from the Institut Néel, CNRS and Yuriy Mokrousov from Forschungszentrum Jülich, gave an introductory session on "Spin Hall Effect and Spin-Orbit Torques." In their respective talks, Christian Back introduced the basic concepts of spin currents and spin Hall effect, Stefania Pizzini gave an experimental introduction to spin-orbit torques and Yuriy Mokrousov explained the basics of berry phase physics and spin Hall conductivity on the example of the curvature of a potato chip. 17.03.2016 – Physics Tango in Colombia

This year, the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla celebrated its 50th anniversary. As part of the festivities, the 19th Catédra Europa took place from March 14th - 18th. The large scale event provides a platform for scientific and cultural encounters between Colombian and European Academia. Jairo Sinova was invited to introduce his visions for new interdisciplinary approaches to scientific work, which he likes to compare to a scientific tango. Accordingly, his lecture was entitled "El tango de la fisica".

02.02.2016 – Junior Research Leader Position in Theoretical Ab-Initio Spintronics

(EG13 TV-L with the possibility of becoming permanent)

We are pleased to announce an opening for a research leader position in theoretical condensed matter in the Institute of Physics of the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz starting in the Spring of 2016 or later working on spintronics ab-initio transport studies and ab-initio code development in complex spintronics materials. The appointment involves research in the group of Prof. Dr. Jairo Sinova and the newly founded SPIN+X SFB in direct collaboration with the experimental and theoretical research partners in Mainz and in the Technical University Kaiserslautern. The Sinova group conducts research in a broad range of topics related to spin phenomena and theoretical condensed matter physics.
