17.03.2016 – Physics Tango in Colombia

This year, the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla celebrated its 50th anniversary. As part of the festivities, the 19th Catédra Europa took place from March 14th - 18th. The large scale event provides a platform for scientific and cultural encounters between Colombian and European Academia. Jairo Sinova was invited to introduce his visions for new interdisciplinary approaches to scientific work, which he likes to compare to a scientific tango. Accordingly, his lecture was entitled "El tango de la fisica".

Since Wednesday, Xavier Waintal from the Grenoble Institute of Nanosciences and Cryogenics has been our guest. On Thursday, he gave an engaging talk on "Ultrafast pulses, spin torque and artificial antiferromagnets."

02.02.2016 – Junior Research Leader Position in Theoretical Ab-Initio Spintronics

(EG13 TV-L with the possibility of becoming permanent)

We are pleased to announce an opening for a research leader position in theoretical condensed matter in the Institute of Physics of the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz starting in the Spring of 2016 or later working on spintronics ab-initio transport studies and ab-initio code development in complex spintronics materials. The appointment involves research in the group of Prof. Dr. Jairo Sinova and the newly founded SPIN+X SFB in direct collaboration with the experimental and theoretical research partners in Mainz and in the Technical University Kaiserslautern. The Sinova group conducts research in a broad range of topics related to spin phenomena and theoretical condensed matter physics.

28.01.2016 – Visit from Kyoung-Whan Kim

We are very happy that, in spite of the heavy weather conditions, Kyoung-Whan Kim from the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology made it from Maryland to Mainz for a three day visit. He gave a very interesting talk on "Spin transport related to spin-orbit coupling."

26.01.2016 – Visit from Roberto Raimondi and Cosimo Gorini

This week, the INSPIRE group had the pleasure to welcome Prof. Roberto Raimondi from the University of Rome and Dr. Cosimo Gorini from the University of Regensburg. On January 26th, Raimondi gave a talk on "Spin current swapping and spin Hall effect in a 2DEG" presenting recent results about spin-orbit induced effects in a two-dimensional electron gas. Gorini talked about "Thermoelectric conversion in disordered nanowires" on January 28th. Of course, the group members used the chance to vividly discuss the theories presented.

26.01.2016 – Open Doors Day

The INSPIRE group took part in the open doors day of Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz by inviting secondary school students to dip a toe in the water of theoretical Spintronics. Karin Everschor and Jacob Gayles gave our guests a presentation entitled "The future technology of Spintronics – the diverse quantum world of condensed matter" introducing spintronics as a scientific discipline and giving the students a lively insight into the life and work of researchers in this field. After the theoretical part, Andreas Kehlberger from the Kläui Lab took the potential junior researchers on a tour of the laboratories of the experimentalists. We were very happy about the interest shown by the students and are looking forward to host the next collaborative open doors day of the Kläui Lab and INSPIRE/SPICE.

14.12.2015 – SPICE/INSPIRE Christmas party

secret santa — Jairo did a great job as secret Santas's right hand man as he handed out the presents, which bore a little surprise for everyone.

On December 14th, the SPICE team and INSPIRE group had their Christmas party at the cosy tavern "Beichtstuhl" in the Mainz old town. In a cheerful atmosphere, the group members and their plus ones enjoyed the traditional food and wine of the region, looking back at an eventful year 2015 for both the INSPIRE group and the SPICE Center.

03.12.2015 – SPICE/INSPIRE Group Seminar in Bamberg

On the December 03^rd and 4^th, the SPICE team and Inspire group had an internal group seminar in the picturesque city of Bamberg in Franconia. Under the title “New Directions in the Spin Phenomena," the participants explored innovative approaches to interdisciplinary in Spintronics Research. After a nice train journey through the Bavarian landscape, SPICE-Director Jairo Sinova opened the seminar in the beautiful Barock Hotel close to the Bamberg cathedral. In the afternoon, the group had a guided tour through the old part of town followed by a visit of the famous Bamberg Christmas Market. After some Glühwein the group enjoyed traditional Bavarian food in the nice atmosphere of a quaint old town restaurant. Friday started with two workshops – one for the administrative staff led by SPICE project manager Valerie Rung and one for the scientific staff managed by our visiting postdoc Kei Yamamoto. We thank the participants for two beautiful and successful days in Bamberg.
